I am taking a beginners coarse in drawing. This week I needed to do a project that consisted of subtractive drawing on charcoal paper with charcoal to create the image of draped material. I found it extremely difficult. Does anyone have any suggestions for this type of project?
By charcoal paper I assume you mean “ cartridge paper” ? Which is quite thick, smooth, general drawing paper . Usually white I will make a suggestion of how I would do it. A piece of material eg a white linen napkin, or a plain coloured tea towel. Scrumple it up and place on a plain surface, have a good light source. Use quite thick charcoal and cover the whole surface of your paper in charcoal, do this by lying the thickish piece of charcoal on its side and rubbing it across back and forth. You can even it out with a piece of kitchen roll. Use a putty rubber, an ordinary one will work but a putty rubber is easier and you can break bits off it. Use the rubber to draw into the charcoal covered paper , you can look at the lightest highlights and using the rubber extenuate them. Draw into the paper with the charcoal used in the normal fashion l try it a few times to see how it evolves....hope this makes sense. Or do it the normal way draw the cloth with the charcoal stick and use your fingers to make soft strokes and edges. Charcoal is lovely if not messy.
Maybe take a picture of your subject and print it out in monochromatic tone. this should give you an idea where best to place your highlights. Not and easy subject, all the best.
Thanks, Sylvia. I've done this a few times in the distant past. Getting the tonal quality you want is a real bind, on times.
You're not on your own, Kathy, I don't have one, Why not ask one of the tutors to help you out, if nothing else, it will show them your interest. Just a suggestion for you to consider.
