I run a highly successful art business from my Lincolnshire studio. My paintings range from portraits, still lifes, landscapes, horses and liturgical artwork for Churches. Having built up this business from scratch and being a self taught painter I am shocked and dismayed by the fact that after paying a bill of £30,000 in the form of University tuition fees (plus living costs) less than one percent of art school graduates find work in fine art. Those that do receive salaries rank among the lowest 20% of graduate salaries in the country. I have decided to offer opportunities by way of a form of internship to young artists so that they can benefit from my knowledge, practical skills and contacts. What I am offering will not be a typical internship. It is designed for those seriously interested in a career in painting within the sort of traditional style that you see in his work. I produce my oil paintings using traditional methods and materials. The 'young artists' will assist me in my work giving them the opportunity to learn and practice these techniques. They will also gain valuable experience of marketing, exhibiting and selling artwork. I will assist them setting up as self employed sole traders, helping them to manage their cash flows and accounts until they understand what it means to be self reliant as a small business. There is a small fee that covers all costs. But fees will be available to the Young Artists for the pieces of my painting that they contribute towards. They will also be building a sellable portfolio and earning from commissions that they will be actively pursuing during their stay. In short, they should cover their costs. I currently have both residential and non-residential placements available for 18-21 year olds for a working period commencing November 2012. This working period runs for a minimum of a year: November to September, and acceptance is on the strength of a portfolio and performance in a study week.
