Does anyone remember the function on the old site that allowed you to search for local art groups/clubs? I can't seem to find it anywhere at the moment. Help!
Ah, it seems on the mobile site I have to go to the homepage and look for a little link under the title but above the gallery called "art clubs" then search from that page... Mystery found and then solved. It doesn't matter anyway there is nothing in St Helens, I've been looking everywhere for a local group. Up here they seem to pride themselves on the "thriving art scene" but it's elusive to me at the moment.
I'm going right off groups, to be honest .... the only advantage I've ever seen in them is the financial one: clubbing together to hire a venue and get insurance is a lot less onerous than trying to do it yourself. But apart from that .... I dunno, I'm probably just in an old man's grump at the moment, but unless you actually WORK together, ie paint together, as opposed to just show together, you're constantly judging your colleagues and asking yourself if you really want to be showing with them; and probably they're thinking the same thing about you.... But then, it's working together I think you have in mind. That sort of group is, partly for logistical reasons, hard to find wherever you might be - and probably worth its collective weight in gold when you can.
I belong to group of about 12 of us who meet regularly each week - the South Leics Art Group ( and yes - we refer to ourselves as the SLAGS ) We each do our own thing entirely and work in a variety of mediums and different subject matter but are there to support each other and offer advice wherever it is wanted. On top of this there is great camaraderie and much banter. I would really miss it if ever it was disbanded. For me this sort of group is worth its weight in gold. We don't have exhibitions so the only admin is sorting out the room and SAA membership for insurance purposes so it almost runs itself. I would urge anyone who is unable to find a group to get together with other like-minded artists and set something up - I guess the difficulty is finding others to join you.
I do get very easily distracted if I am working in a busy space with other people, however I have had good experinces a few times when I had my headphones with me.. Not joking, its a great way to still be in a space with other people but have your own space at the same time. Plus I find the right music very soothing and inspiring. And when you are wearing them, its a suttle hint to others that you would like not to be bothered when you have headphones on. And every 45 minutes I take them off and chat, walk around for 10-15 minutes. Works for me.
Art clubs can be a good thing. As Robert has said, they help you share the burden of an exhibition. Getting a solo exhibition is never easy so a group event is the next best solution. You may not find a club that suits you first off, but I have been fortunate to have found like minded people in the two art societies I belong to.
I like art clubs/groups/associations whatever. I do paint alone with music at high volume usually, if my wife is out or at the end of the garden, but I have been a member of a club for many years holding member up to president roles. At out February committee meeting I suggested we should have more painting together sessions. We only have a few all day workshops. The idea was put down fiercely by one committee member. She said she could never work in a group, demanded absolute silence and time to think and not be distracted. Being a new man I decided not to take up the issue but will as I get my feet further under the table. I like the company of others and myself so am happy either way as long as it's not just a social gathering. I once attended a council run evening class where several ladies had attended over years and very rarely produced anything - of note, just a load of chatter. To this end I would say as programme secretary I book the demos and talks and if any person in POL is interested in a Saturday afternoon couple hours in Winchester to demonstrate/talk to us for a fee, please get in touch with me.
