A couple of years ago I went to a demonstration of W&N Artisan oils and the demonstrator made the point that it was cheaper and just as good to use household acrylic undercoat instead of white gesso primer, and that in fact they were virtually the same. I have tried it and it certainly seems true for painting on MDF. As gesso primer is really acrylic and not true gesso do you think that this is true. The fact that he was doing the demo for W&N certainly gives it a lot of credibility. I cannot remember the guys name but he was quite a well known wildlife painter. He also was very vehement on that you should NEVER paint on hardboard as the binding material will eventually leak through.
