Have taken advantage of some bargain pricing in the POL bookshop to purchase three American oil painting DVDs at a fraction of the RRP. I am usually dubious about DVDs, having seen some poor stuff in the past, so if buying usually tend to stick to names I know and trust and, being a Yorkshireman, expect good value. I was not familiar with any of the artists presenting these DVDs, Katherine Hurley (Capturing the Essence of Landscape in Oils), Brian Keeler (Oil Painting Techniques: Dramatic Sky) and Joy Thomas (Painting Oil Portraits) but having watched the first two I feel I would have got my total moneys worth from either of them. While I would not necessarily adopt the techniques of either wholesale there are tips and pointers in both that are useful and will encourage me to try a few experiments. The portrait DVD is for another day as I rarely paint portraits, although I draw portraits and figure studies regularly.
