I have been using W&N artists acrylic but using Daler Rowney slow drying gel (in a tube). I was seeing two things, it was drying a tad darker and I wasn't get the degree of oil type blending ability that I had hoped for.
Anyway bought the W&N stuff that is specifically designed for the range and there is quite a difference. firstly this is a translucent type gel resulting in no colour shift, just like it says on the label. Secondly the effects are very strong, I placed a dollop out like I would with the Daler Rowney and used it the same way and the paint just when very thin and slippery, almost glaze like. You just need smaller amounts of this stuff and it really has the paint flowing and blending on the canvas.
I probably (read I did) dropped the ratio too much because I feel that I did not get as much open time as I expected. I need to get a better balance between the volume used and the thickness that I want to keep the paint at. The bottle says go to 1:1 ratio to get double the drying time and that you can use UPTO this ratio (i.e. for less than double trying time) but acrylics dry so quickly anyway, that this still means you are working quite quickly to get the effects you want before it goes off.
My first impression is that 1:1 would be too thin for my needs but I will keep on plodding on at it. Anyway, an excellent product overall for acrylic users.
