Hello Rob,This is a painting process used by a lot of our contemporary watercolourists, especially by Ewa Karpinska. She is a former student of the French artist Jean-Louis Morelle and has now developed her own style.Her technique is a little bit different than Arthur Melville's : she mixes Chinese white with pure watercolours and then, she saturates the paper with colours. She uses the different stages of paper wetness to create different effects, lifting colours, ...Here is a link to view some of her works . The result is often abstract, her colours are still vibrant and transparent, despite the use of an opaque basis (Chinese White) .
