Hi again, I'm currently working on the painting in the picture and am wondering what a good finish would be once it's finished. It will need fixing as the surface won't hold the paint too well. The painting is of the late F1 driver Jules Bianchi and is actually painted on a section of skid block/plank from one of the Marussia cars he drove in 2014. It's made from a wood, resin composite called Jabroc.
Did you start with a couple of coats of gesso ? If you have iacrylic should adhere well to most rigid surfaces. Personally I would now varnish the finished painting if you still feel unhappy put it under glass.
Yes, provided the surface wasn't greasy - in which case nothing will work to prevent it peeling away in time, I'm afraid - a coat of acrylic varnish would be a good idea; and/or Golden acrylics make a product which is intended to act between the paint layer and the subsequent varnish - there's a blog I'm trying and failing to remember which explains this. I'll come back later and post the link if I can find it. I would have thought, in the meantime, that a wood/resin compound, if de-greased with methylated spirits/iso alcohol, would hold the paint - something is obviously causing you concern about that, but I'm unsure what it is?
http://willkempartschool.com/ There's a lot of information on this site about varnishing and protecting acrylic paintings - you may have to search for it, but there's a long thread there on the subject.
Cheers everyone. I didn't want to to prime the surface as (not evident in the pic) it has some really nice wear marks from being bounced over the kerbs and bottoming out in the Grand Prix it was used in. I'm liking the varnish suggestions but think I'll plumb for a matt finish version.
You can get matt varnish, don't forget - I haven't seen many for acrylics, but they exist.
