Does anybody have any tips for painting a picture where the person is wearing grey acid wash type jeans like in this photo? http://www.rustyzipper.com/full/183020.jpg In the photo I am painting these are really up close (so close that under the knee takes up about half of the photo) I want to try my best at it because they kind of make the picture, so I don't want to just settle for blue jeans or something to make it easier. I cannot think of how to blend the colors and make the effect so it actually looks like these jeans and it doesn't look like some grey mess.
Two suggestions: one, use a blotting technique - with kitchen towels, or a bit of cloth; or a natural sponge - practise on a piece of paper until you get the result you want; or paint the fabric dark and wash into it with clean water, reinstating the darks where necessary and coming back in with dilute white paint or grey. The one method is a mechanical technique, using materials to achieve an effect, the other is more directly painting. You could also use dry brush - either on the white of the canvas or paper, or over a previously applied layer of paint - scrub the paint on with an old bristle brush with a minimum of water, because to get this effect it's scumbling rather than blending that you need. Probably a combination of these techniques would bear fruit.
You dont mention what paint method you are using?? Both of Roberts suggestions sound good.
