I wonder what brand you used - some of them are a bit resistant to further work, though most are very receptive to additional work with brush OR painting knife. Cryla - one of my favourites - dries to an egg-shell finish: it's best to build it up, thin to thick, to get the best out of it. Really, there's not much you CAN'T do with acrylic, except paint it over oil or a greasy surface - it won't take, it'll either crack or more usually form bubbles and peel away - I discovered that the hard way years ago, when inadvertently using a canvas primed for oil paint (but they're extremely hard to find now - i.e. canvases primed with Foundation White oil).
