Now and then, yes. Painting the same subject in a different medium gives you the opportunity for a fresh look and helps you learn more about it. Many artists of the past painted many, many studies of the same thing - although most of them would have painted in oil: I don't know that many do so now, but I can see no good reason why they wouldn't. There's inevitably a touch of repetition in most figurative paintings - and a fair amount in abstracts. Painting different studies to improve is one thing though - painting to achieve perfection would be a waste of time, because none of us could ever achieve it.

I do know that when I paint a subject a second time (usually because I'm not satisfied with the first attempt) I can never seem to get the same vibrancy or even standard achieved in the first attempt. As a result I usually look afresh at the first attempt and think 'perhaps it's not so bad after all'. Mind you I've never changed mediums - might be worth trying it to see how it helps in gaining a fresh look as Robert suggests.

Well! Painting in 3's has certainly helped me this week. I ve promised my sister in law a painting of beach huts and it has to be ready for the weekend. I nearly gave up as the first and second attempt I was uneasy about ( why do we artists get this feeling? ) .
I was encouraged by my husband to start again and a good friend gave me the good advice to paint it as if I was going to keep it for myself. This time I'm pleased with my painting. It's not quite finished but, hopefully this will be the one that goes on her wall ( although she has permission to put it in the loft if need be).
