This was the last one I painted on a box canvas with finished edges: Sky first, including edges. Then central content, extremities of the Diner first so I could paint the sides, then when the sky was dry flipped the canvas 180 degrees and painted the tarmac. Bish bash bosh, as I believe they say in Peckham. I use fast drying oils which helps matters.
Excellent painting Anth!  But no one has mentioned storage of canvases.  For a beginner, you cannot expect to be selling them straight away, so storage is an issue.  the deeper the canvas, the more space it takes up, so I'm going for boards these days and recycling old canvases that I have not sold. I also would add to Robert's excellent early post on this subject, a couple of brown colours - burnt and raw umber.
Storage can be fun Linda - I’m lucky that I have space but it’s hard when you don’t. I use boards now but I’m going to try some of the brands mentioned here.
Alan, as an admirer of your car paintings I'd be very interested to know which brand and type of paints you use?
Was that for me Steve? If so, I mainly use Pebeo quick drying oils as I’m an impatient fellow unfortunately :) with current weather conditions they’re often dry in less than a day and are nice to work with and easy on the wallet. I use Liquin as a medium.
Thanks very much Alan.  Yes I was asking about your paints and slightly hijacking the thread which I hope I will be forgiven for!  Interested that you use Pebeo oil paints.  These are not ones I had thought about  but they obviously produce good results.  Thanks again.
No problem Steve! And it’s Anth, not Alan, which is why I was mildly confused :)
That's a magnificent painting, whatever you may have done with the canvas edges!

Oops. Sorry about that.
No problem Steve 😁 and thanks Robert, although I just noticed that the picture shows it incomplete!
Anth/Alan your attention to detail always has me entranced. Some people can do it magnificently and some like me, are complete rubbish.  Brilliant pic Sylvia/Sheila.
Hello again, thank you all so much for your advice. I have ordered some brushes from Rosemary & Co and now I am looking at the Loxley Canvas boards from artdiscount.co.uk. Could you tell me if I need to treat the canvas in any way before painting on it or if I can just go ahead and paint? Also, I am looking at getting some lighting as the room in which I paint gets really dark from mid afternoon onward. Would you recommend any particular type, I paint on a desktop easel and use both a desk and the dining room table, so it would need to be portable? Thank you all so much you've been such a help to me.......off to look at paint now......
