‘Pure Joy’- an exhibition of pure watercolour by Clive Wilson at John Adams Fine Art at Ebury Galleries, London SW1
Opening hours: Weekdays: 10:00 - 18:00hrs
Clive Wilson hosts a selling exhibition of works in pure watercolour at the Ebury Galleries from Monday 26th until Wednesday 28th November, 2007. This watercolour show includes landscape scenes from Venice, India, and Sri Lanka, all illustrating the luminosity and subtleties that can be achieved with pure watercolour. Clive Wilson, a largely self-taught artist, who has long been an exponent of pure watercolour, is a master in handling atmosphere and light, as seen in his capturing the evening light on the backwaters of Kerala in Sunrise at Mankotta Island. This often neglected medium offers the artist a far greater range of colour and expression than mainstream watercolour techniques; as can be seen in the brilliant saris of Washerwomen and the reflections they make on the water. Pure watercolour (as opposed to other water-based media, such as acrylics and gouache, with greater covering quality), offers greater subtlety, luminosity and richness, depending for its beauty on transparency to catch fleeting effects of atmosphere and light. Wilson has a keen following of international collectors, who regularly commission him to capture their homes or a favoured view. The artist has a cartoonist’s eye in capturing the fleeting moment, or hidden gesture of a coy village lady. The selection of works Wilson will be showing at this year’s show at the Ebury Galleries, include views from recent painting trips to Rajasthan, Sri Lanka, Kerala, Venice and elsewhere. His evocative works include the jewel colours of Wedding preparations in a Brahmin Village, and a glimpse of the cool courtyard of Palazzo Beneventano del Bosco, Siracuse. Wilson’s love of the water can be seen in his images of the bright sails of dinghies of a Regatta in front of Santa Maria del Salute, Venice, and the long shadows thrown by a barge laden with coconuts in Kerala. His eye captures the frantic bustle of Udaipur market, as well as the cool serenity of a monk walking by a stupa in The Bodhi Tree, Kandy. Clive Wilson comments: “Works with pure watercolour offer the artist the ability to capture the fleeting qualities of light and atmosphere. I hope visitors to this exhibition enjoy the depth of colour and luminosity afforded by this medium.”
