From Saturday 17th September the Harrison Lord Gallery will take you on a journey. This is theme for its new art exhibition showcasing a wide range of contemporary artists. The show features work by over 20 artists, covering a wide range of styles and genres with one thing in common, all the work was in one way or another inspired by a journey. Whether documenting a journey from A to B; exploring and responding to places; or using historical or personal journeys in order to better understand identity – they have all used this theme as a basis for their work. The show features a mix of work by some popular favourites such as Clare Haley, Stephen Todd, Rashna Hackett, Roger Simpson and Wendy Jones and some artists new to the gallery including Fiona Walker, Rosalind Annis, Pauline Meade, Sam Mortimer and Sara Stabb. Highlights include; new work by Sheffield artist Liz Thompson who is a regular exhibitor at many top London galleries; Paddy Campbell who has recently relocated to the North from the Channel Islands and sees the big skies over the Pennines as a great inspiration; Stephen Todd who is inspired by his visits to the Humber and seeing the new wind farms offshore and Sam Mortimer who travels the world in his role as a bomb disposal expert in the Army but who needs to paint as a form of relaxation. Also the exhibition features work by Sharon Taylor who worked for many years as an animator in the making of Bob the Builder. Her paper cuts are inspired by the imagined journeys in famous children’s books such as Wind in the Willows and Alice in Wonderland. Stephen Todd is showing 10 new works inspired by his journeys along the Humber whilst Rashna Hackett’s abstract work is a journey exploring her feelings and emotions. Sam Mortimer, whose day job is a bomb disposal expert in the army, has on show a dramatic painting of Florence whilst Paddy Campbell has been inspired by his walks on the Pennines. Nick Coley creates landscapes in a truly unique way. He cuts marks into sheets of aluminium with a drill and all sorts of unlikely tools and then paints over the top. The end result is an almost 3D effect. It all adds up to a exciting exhibition where the expected is alongside the unexpected!
