Oliver downing

Biography

Art was my favourite subject at school (a midlands comp.) often painting en plein air. I was persuaded by my headmaster (a chemist) to study sciences at A-level. After completing two science degrees, starting a career, getting married and starting a family I started painting again (watercolours and pen and ink sketches) in 1979 (very much part time). 20 years ago I switched to soft pastels. 12 years ago I took early retirement to Exmoor and started painting in acrylics. I have recently had a flirtation with pastels again. I am particularly drawn (excuse the pun) to skies and the landscapes of unspoilt country-side e.g. UK national Parks.
