Fabulous drawing of Sky Timothy. I think we get so 'into' the drawing, we don't step back to see what it looks like, this is especially true when drawing as opposed to working on an easel.

That's right Margaret, working on an easel does afford you the chance to view the work as others will, while being hunched over a drawing board or sketchbook gives you a skewed perspective you have try and be aware of before it becomes an issue.

fab drawing ,glad your customer liked it and so they should ,a lot of work goes into these portraits

Commissioned portrait of a Labrador/Rottweiler cross called Sky. Staedtler Mars Lumograph graphite pencils on Strathmore Heavyweight Drawing paper, A3. This one I will admit was not easy - I originally tried it in colour, with pastel pencils, as the dog's coat was a very unique golden honey colour. But try as I might it just never looked right, always looked 'false' and unrealistic. So, as the customer had explicitly stated that they didn't mind how I did it, I decided it might be safer to revert to graphite and remove that particular difficulty. All went well until I was approaching completion and stepped back for a good long look....and my wife remarked that the muzzle was too long and he looked more like a Whippet. I couldn't deny it, and had to make some fairly major proportional changes to his face, but the results were much more satisfying and the customer was very pleased, so....all's well that ends well!
