A touch of the Jackson Pollock here Thea. Love it!

That's what I thought Thea. Lovely

Thank you very much Christine and Dennis. To my shame I have never looked at any work by Jackson Pollack, but have just done so now and I see what you mean. Do you think I could sell this one for the prices Pollack gets for his, lol!! In my dreams.....

This is a great way to produce lovely abstracts Thea! If you blow with a straw you can control it more and you can make beautiful trees for example. A little bit splattering on top of that, et voilà!

Ah I love it , what super effects and an exciting result. You know how I feel about experimenting with watercolour and this is a joy to see and I've a feeling it'll be the first of many. Inspiring work as well ..I'm off to look for a straw, something I've never thought of using before.

Thank you Satu and Louise for your encouragement for my new 'style' of painting! I did think of using a straw, but I felt even that would give me too much control over what happened, so I decided that it should just be me, the paint and the paper. I will try a straw though as it sounds fun and I also have some ideas for extending this way of painting. Gosh, I never thought I would ever be an experimenter - what a revelation and it is all down to doing the one liners which opened doors for me.

I sense your excitement and enthusiasm which is what painting is all about in my book!!

It is exciting when you are doing something new and also over which you have little control. I never thought I would say that as I tended to stick to the tried and tested, but it's obviously never too late to burn your bra and let your hair down, lol!

Wonderful. I met a chinese artist in Guilin, china, who paints in the same way as you do -- mind you he practises kung fu and special breathing exercises and therefore can control with his breath the direction of the flow of paint when he blows on it. I love your work for its freedom of style.

Thank you very much, Sunil, for your very kind comment. I believe a lot of Chinese artists do using this method to produce paintings and I can see why, as it is very exciting and rewarding to do.

I wouldn't go that far Thea..LOL

This worked well Thea, love the colours as they run together. Great abstract.

Not very good at reading abstract, very colourful and cheery

Exciting experiments Mrs Cable [ or should that be Guru?!!] well done on your first abstract!

Thank you very much Carole, Debs and Glennis for those kind comments. Glennis - I am not sure I know how to read abstracts either! However, this one is simple - there is no hidden message or meaning - just a bit of fun with colour - that's all.

Very nice Thea - It's funny I was thinking of doing some spatter art recently and haven't been on POL for a while now - strange. Anyhow I really like this and how the colours are interacting.

Looks like you had fun with this one Thea , its lovely.and painting in my opinion should be fun . I notice other paintings in this style on the gallery now ,you've started another trend . It reminds me a bit of Jackson Pollock's work .

I thought no, this can't be a Thea......but it is and it's fabulous! It was your palette I recognised, great work and I hope we will see more of your experimentation.

It works very well Thea! I can see lots of flowers and then I look again and I can see people dancing!

Thank you very much Joseph, Dennis, Fiona and Sarah for your extremely generous comments. Joseph - I seem to have stated something on the gallery with the spattering and blowing paint (not that I thought of the concept in the first place of course - can't claim that!). The gallery does love a challenge and it is fun when other people have a go at something - gives a nice feeling of community. Dennis, other people have mentioned Jackson Pollack, and I had never seen a painting by him until yesterday, when I looked at some of his work. I think I like his earlier work better than the later stuff, mainly because it has more colour. Fiona - bet you never thought you'd see the day I did an abstract - wonders never cease, eh! Sarah, I think that's the interesting thing about abstract art (which I am only just beginning to appreciate) in that you can see what you want in it. Now that you have mentioned dancing people, I can see them too!

This is my first abstract! I have had a go in the past but I have always been too controlling and ended up producing tidy, recognisable shapes rather than anything remotely abstract and expressive. I decided to try dropping paint onto the paper and then blowing it in the directions that I wanted. Not actually touching the paper with a paint brush takes away a lot of the control and although I could roughly blow the paint where I wanted it, it definitely had a mind of its own. Anyway, it's a start and I shall have a few more goes to see what happens. Watercolour (and puff!) on Fabriano Artistico 140lbs.

About the Artist
Thea Cable

I am a watercolourist first and foremost as I love the qualities of the medium, its riskiness and unpredictability. I started painting about 8 years ago and it has now become an integral part of my life. Hopefully, I will continue to paint into my dotage as I am given to understand that you can…
