I like it Stephen its a simple but effective work well done

Stephen very accurate tonal design here. Not always easy but successful. An outdoor work which for me works best as I rely on the right side of the brain! As they say 'Don't think-Just get on with it.

Many thanks Dennis and Alan for your encouraging comments.

Good sketch Stephen and doesn't the quality of sketchbook surface make a difference. I haven't tried the moleskin one you mention which I'm guessing from your painting is heavy quality paper. The paint seems to have settled well on it evident in your clean washes. I've been using some handmade cotton rag Khadi paper which I like a lot. I do like the lively way that you've painted the foliage in this one, the decoration just hinted at on the building and the three dark verticals add a lot to the composition.

many thanks once again, Louise. I think I bought the sketchbook from Waterstones bookshop on Deansgate, they have a wide range of sketchbooks and journals.

I went on a city break to Budapest last week and tried to fit a few quick sketches in. I painted this on a cruise boat, waiting for it to sail. There are so many lovely old buildings in Budapest, mixed in with modern office blocks, as here with the building to the right. I treated myself to a new moleskin watercolour sketchbook (8""x5"), which has a lovely surface.

Stephen Slater

I am a self taught amateur painter, I mostly paint landscapes in watercolour but I 'dabble' in other mediums from time to time. I really enjoy my art, especially painting outdoors when the weather allows.
