Acrylic on canvas board 24"x20" I think. Submitted and accepted for the GAvA exhibition in the Mall Galleries this year. It took a while to sort this one out. I remember these huge aircraft thundering over my head, when, as a small boy, I stood on Plymouth Hoe looking towards RAF Mount Batten. I wanted to portray the Sunderland as she hauls her tired crew the last few miles (14 approx) to touch down in Plymouth Sound. To emphasise the location I had the aircraft passing over the Eddystone lighthouse. Passing over the top of the Sunderland are two Westland Whirlwind fighters also on their way home after a low level sortie to France. The've a little further to go to reach home base near Exeter. Originally there were four fighters, the other two were on the left side of the painting. Having had fun putting them in I realised that it wasn't a dynamic composition. Good old acrylics. Big white square and repaint the sky - better balance all round. Hope you like the result. Sorry about the darkish band at the top. Bad photography I'm afraid, it is the shadow of the protective cellophane strip over the frame.
