I love carbon pencil - a bit of a challenge to use it on watercolour paper, but, as here, it can yield impressive results when it works.

Carbon pencil with pale yellow watercolour wash over white areas. Drawn on 140 lb watercolour paper, I masked off a 200mm x 200mm square in the centre of the paper to give a hard edge to the drawing.
