How odd, sounds just like the sort of thing my husband might say, but as far as I know, he's never been to Market Harborough... I lke this very much, Michael, I like the mossiness on the roofs and the warmth of the buildings' stone. I hope you don't mind my sharing a thought: I read somewhere (James FW?) that it can be helpful to a painting to paint windows at ground level darker than those higher up. He said the higher ones generally reflect more sky, and the lower ones tend to reflect the ground and nearby objects. Hope that doesn't sound like bollards to you.

This is a lovely painting Michael, I have an old video somewhere, where Ray Campbell Smith is encouraging the viewers to paint 'looseley and impressionistically' and then adds at exhibitions how people look very closely at paintings and say 'look at the details in this one'. So you are in good company.

The colours in this give a real feeling of warmth and I rather like it without poeple; perhaps it's siesta time... As for the bollards, well, we all see things differently, but I wonder why the person in question didn't just go and take a photo?

Really lovely painting Michael

Great perspective on the buildings Michael, and lovely warm tones. Hope your wife's convalescing is going well.

His loss I say . A lovely painting Michael.

Well 'bollards' to him then! Aren't the viewing public silly sometimes. If they want a photo - take a photo - a painting is supposed to be an artistic impression and if you want your painting to be bollard-less, then that is your artistic decision. This painting, although a bit tighter than your later work, has a lovely crispness which suits the subject. I also like the warmth of your buildings and the nice sense of light in the sky.

Really nice perspective, Michael and peaceful colour, Michael.

Thanks to you all for your kind comments

This is a real gem, Michael, missing bollards notwithstanding! You've presented the scene admirably, with a super composition and beautiful washes and light. It was the potential purchaser's loss, for sure!

A fine watercolur painting Michael, as many have already said in this post, some of the public are so sillly with their remarks and do not seem to be able to understand using a bit of artitic licence to achieve the end results that an artist imagines. Funnily enough I had a similiar experiece of a street scene I had painted in Crieff where a customer was viewing my piece in a gallery there and stated there was a large lampost missing from the view albeit it was right in the middle of the piece and that was his reasson for not purchasing !!! anyway it was sold to someone else very soon after so alls well that ends well as they say !!.

A lovely street scene with lots of super details, lots of interest. I like the loosely painted trees along side the definition in architectural detail, super!

Thanks Seok, Graham and Lesley. Graham - I have had the reverse of this situation - i sold a picture and was feeling quite chuffed until the purchaser said she only bought because it includud a phone box - she only buys pictures with phone boxes in them!!

Not doing much at the moment so one from the 'back catalogue'. Looking at it afresh it's a little tight and could do with some figures in the foreground for interest. It was displayed at a local exhibition and someone was showing interest - I thought I had a sale!! When I approached him he said 'bollards' . I said 'pardon' and he repeated 'bollards' He went on to explain that I had left some bollards out and therefore it wasn't true to the scene so he wouldn't buy it!! Well you win some and you lose some! I've still got it!
