Loket Castle revisited

A big improvement Mia! You’ve given it a bit more tonal impact, which has created a three dimensional effect - low tonal values usually translates to a flat piece of art! It’s important to remember that a photo is there to be used as a reference only, it’s up to us artists to do our own thing and make it more interesting... good job done!

Your result is a fine job Mia, and as Alan says the work is the artist's view. Lovely.

Super and your efforts have paid off

Thank you very much Alan, Jim, Heather and Russell for your positive and encouraging comments.

Much better!

I think you got good advice there, and benefited from it. This now looks solid and imposing. Wish I could live in a castle...... passages; tunnels; secrets; crypt; boiling oil from concealed attack points: lovely!

Excellent piece of work Mia

Nicely done Mia real structure and form, nice one.

Superb interpretation Mia.

Thank you all for your positive comments. I appreciate!

Super sketch Mia, the invented shadows lift the castle beautifully.

Many thanks, Anjana, I appreciate!

Shadows give it depth and body. I always add them myself if using a rather flat photo as reference, just make sure I have the point of illumination firmly in mind. It’s a good image.

Thank you very much, Frank.

When I posted the first version of this monochrome, Alan Bickley suggested to deepen the shadows and also add some cast shadows on the buildings. So, I looked up the photo I used to paint this castle and... no shadows at all, it was taken on a very cloudy day. So I decided to invent the shadows and I hope I did it well. What do you think? My picture today is also taken in bad light. I hope you can see the difference. All comments very welcome :) Mia
