Dick Van Dyke's Bert the Chimney Sweep in Mary Poppins has a lot to answer for. In reality the life of sweeps in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was not the least romantic. Competition was rife which meant that for a sweep to make any kind of a living they had to work incredibly hard to make barely enough to live. They worked in filthy conditions - apart from that the soot and coal dust they inhaled was carcinogenic as well.
