Superb Lewis, they look like they are having a jolly old time. Like the figures you have included in the puffs of smoke.

Haha just brilliant. So clever the the smoke that's very cool. Fab drawings as always 😊

Great picture to start the series, Lewis. Can't wait to see more and catch the other part of the joke. Can't help thinking there is a strong resemblance to Charles on the left, but what would he be doing in a shed.

Fabulous narrative and a fabulous painting. superb characters as always

Enjoyed watching this develop on the forum Lewis. The pictures in the smoke are an ingenious touch.

They are having a fine old time there Lew, like it should be. Love the smoke effects.

Absolutely great Lewis, your characters always so believable. As said the figures in the smoke enhance !

Another excellent painting Lew , and as always beautifully done. Their thought taking shoe in the smoke is a stroke of genius.

Excellent drawing Lewis - love the expressions on their faces.

I think you must have in-sider knowledge Lewis, the smoke gives it away. I smoked a pipe for almost 50 yrs & loved to relax with my briar & my thoughts. Gave it up for health reasons 10 yrs ago so the pipes are now restricted to an occasional polish in the man shed. Brilliant & thanks for the memories.

What you missed was a couple of kippers hanging up….endless fun, Lewis.

Great as ever Lew. Your work strike so many chords. Like Brian, I also gave up smoking some twelve years ago after having been a serious roll-you-own cigarette man. Sad thing is, I looked forward to being an old man puffing contentedly on a pipe. Due to our sad world I can't now. My tobacco of choice was Clan, and Benson and Hedges. We still have a traditional tobacconist shop in Bolton and the shop is full of wonderful smells. Agghhhh.

Superb Lewis. I used to go to watch Wrexham FC with my granddad many years ago ( still watching them but now with my grandson ) and pipe smokers were a very common sight among the crowd, I used to love the aroma of pipe smoke wafting over the terraces. Whilst out walking just a few days ago I met a young man who was contentedly smoking his pipe and the smell of the smoke instantly took me back to my youth.

Thanks as ever for your great feedback. Nice to read Brian and Jim's recollections. I never managed a pipe, but had several relations who did. Without exception, they all looked wonderfully at ease when puffing away...and those great wafts of aromatic smoke...nice memories. Cigars at Christmas is another memory. Different days.

Wonderful Lewis.

They are really enjoying their great escape Lewis. You have brought this little narrative to life so ingeniously.

Great work Lewis. At least they aren’t smoking kippers.

...Breakfast is on me" ?

Thanks again to all who've had a look and taken the trouble to comment. That's a much better ending to this tired old joke, Hilary. The man says to the psychiatrist, '...I've come to see you about my brother.' A very old and groan worthy joke. Your '...breakfast's on me.' takes first prize. (And it's much more PC, of course.)

Thanks Lewis! Also meant to say I really admire your ability to draw these characters, and the shapes in the smoke.

My dad smoked a pipe Lewis and I would be fascinated by the rituals of a pipe smoker as a girl…..the cleaning and scraping, polishing, taking a sheet of newspaper to blend and rub his chosen tobacco’s, making sure every last flake was packed into the pouch… with a small piece of potato to keep it moist. What memories, thank you for that……terrific as always.

I know guys like this…. Love it

This is super, Lewis. I enjoyed watching its progress in the forum

Never smoked a pipe, but blokes who do always look at ease to me. There were going to be four fellas in this pic, but I need to draw larger and the format didn't allow it. So the other two are sitting where you are. 16 x 12 inches - 300 gsm paper - watercolour-coloured pencil-gouache.

Self taught. Love drawing. Like to make pictures up, without using reference pics, often in cartoon style. I do other pictures where I do use reference. I'm knocking on a bit, born in 1940 in Greenwich, London. Retired, and loving it.
