A man of many talents. Not only are you an expert with watercolour you're a master of oils as well. If they had those emoticon things on here it would be one of the little green jealous ones.

You are very kind Val. Thank you. I would sooner say a 'Jack of all trades'. I like this one myself, but I gave it to a friend for a birthday present, so I have the green face too! If I could have it back, I would correct the shape of bow of the barge. It should be more upright. But too late now! Thanks again Val. Regards John

The lighting here is superb. It has a fresh atmosphere and the water highlighted makes a lovely lead in.

Beautiful painting John, you,ve really done it justice.

Hi John, I really like this painting, the foreground set's it off a treat. Strange you should mention H.M.S. Ganges as I have an Xmas menu signed by all the officers from 1943. Regards Norman.

John, thank you so much for your helpful and encouraging comments left on my pictures. I chose this painting of yours to answer you as you mention 'HMS Ganges', a name I haven't heard for a long time! My father spoke often of his time on Ganges as a boy salior at the age of 15. He spent his time there in the late 1930's. As to my pictures, I have learnt mainly from books and DVD's, am struggling with finding 'my style'. I admire painters such as Seago, Wesson, Aubrey Phillips and Steve Hall. I hate to sound ignorant in terms of computer speak, but what do you mean in your comments regarding the mill....PM I will try? Thank you again John

Fiona.. Thanks yet again for the comments. I was in HMS Ganges in 1954 at age 15 too. So a bit later! PM = Private Message. I will try, means I will try to explain reflections in watercolour; or at least how I do them! John

Thank you John for explaining what PM means...I'm such a dunce!! If I used the forum I would know these things I supose. I will certainly have a go at your method as you suggested. I was thinking of washing out the water part of the mill painting and having another go at it. If it succeeds I'll re-post the picture. Regarding HMS Ganges, there is a very interesting book called 'Band of Brothers' ..boy seamen in the Royal Navy 1800-1956, by David Phillipson. It's a very good read. Thanks again for you advise...Fiona

This is from a sketch of a barge that I made in 1955, when I was at HMS Ganges, on the Shotley Peninsula, Suffolk. Memories of days sailing a short way up the River Orwell, to Pin Mill, for a Banyan (Picnic) on our all too infrequent weekends off! I wish I could say I still have the sketch, but after keeping it in my folder all those years, my granddaughter, (as a baby), got hold of it and that was that!

About the Artist
John Walker

I have painted most of my life. Childhood Christmases usually found a box of watercolours in my 'stocking'. I left school in 1954 and within 6 months I had enlisted in the Royal Navy, starting at the infamous HMS Ganges, near Shotley, Suffolk. Artists country yes, but no time for such things while…
