Very well done. Extremely tricky to paint a dog face on like this with tongue on a pant - without it looking wrong!

Your drawing skills are great. A few deeper tones and sharper lines in the fur would really make it look great (if you don't mind me saying so).

Technique - crack the pastels, use the edges and less blending with the finger will do the trick for sharper needed details. Pastel pencils will also help sharpened with a scalpel to a nice fine point.

The more great pastel paintings I see like this the more I'm encouraged to get on with it and paint our own dog...so thanks!

Hi Robert thank you so much, its very kind of you to reply AND give me some much appreciated pointers. One of the reasons I use the velour is because I can't seem to get and keep sharp points on any pastel pencils. I use Faber Castell as I have found sampling some of the others they don't seem to 'work' on velour (?)
Thank you mentioning the needed darker tones, I have been very wary of 'going dark' but I am beginning to understand how effective it could be.
Thanks again.

I can almost feel his breath its beautiful.

Nice work Joan. I do agree with you about trying to get pastel pencils to work on velour. Maybe the ones we are using are just too hard.
