Great Grandpa

I like this, Jennifer. Having an interest in these times, and looking at a lot of old photos, it's astonishing how much style many of these men had. A good strong face.

Aw thank you Lewis. As his photo was in sepia I followed the colours in it, It's left me wondering what colour his eyes were?, are they green like mine and my dad's or brown like my nan's? Was his hair curly like mine, my dad's and my nan's? Or straight like my uncle's? So many questions I will never know the answers to.

Well done Jennifer, a lovely portrait of your great grandpa.

How lucky you are to have such photos Jennifer, and well drawn. Both my grandfathers, One English, One Irish, died before I was born. I have army pics of my dad but he too had a poor life. He was a regular soldier for 13 years, was at Dunkirk and never recovered his health. He died at 52, no age a t all.

A lovely portrait, Jennifer.

Aww Jim those times were very sad. My Great great grandad pvt Thomas South died on Flanders field. We're lucky his body was recovered and he has a burial plot over there, not like some who were gone forever. My Great gran This lovely gentleman's wife was his daughter and only a toddler when he was killed, sadly she then grew up without a father. No one knew of my great great granddad and his sacrifice untill recently, as no one spoke of him in the family, how sad is that. Thank you Ellen.

We all have someone don't we. It's impossible to really comprehend what these men went through - and their families. I was the only family member to visit the Menin Gate and see my dad's brother's name, he was never found.

A lovely tribute to your great grandad Jen, so nice to paint a picture that you can keep.

A very distinguished looking gent Jen, their time on earth will never die as long as we do as you’ve done here......and remember.

Aww Marjorie that's so sad he was never found. It's special that you went to visit. Thank you Linda and Fiona. Just think with the digital age we will always have images and details of us captured forever online, our future generations will know all about us with the cluck of a button. How amazing is that. No wondering or hearing half stories, but full on written, photographic and painted proof of who we were.

What a marvellous tribute Jennifer, not only to your great Grandpa but also to the thousands of others who were lost. Well done!

Watercolour paint and micron pen detail. Taken from an old sepia photo of my great grandpa my nan had. I never had the privilege of meeting my great grandpa but my dad looks just like him.
