This is absolutely fine Jan, especially his hand. I think because you know the features well it makes getting the likeness good, but only you know. I tried to paint my dad and never achieved a satisfactory piece,

Thanks for the encouragement, Derek... I seem to remember the portrait of your Dad - didn't you post it on this website? I thought it was very good.

Great portrait Jan, I could never attempt anything like this! Good palette and like Derek says the hand is very good, not easy I imagine.

Thanks, Carole... I could never attempt any of your beautiful nature paintings! I wouldn't even know where to start...

Great painting, Jan, well done and much expressive. As psychiatrist, I am led to think that unconscious feelings make us difficult portray our relatives. I have too many times tried to portray my wife unsuccessful.

Thanks, Cesare. That's a very interesting insight - I studied Psychology so I should have realized what the difficulty might have been!

A really good potrait, nice skin tones and everything in proportion. You've given the eyes real expression, not easy, a good job done.

Thanks, Andre, for the kind comment - much appreciated.

It's another excellent addition to your superb gallery Jan.

Thank you, Dennis and Russell, for your generous comments...

This is lovely, Jan. Great eyes, hair and ear. I also like the gold wedding ring.

Thanks for your nice comment, Jennifer. I'm glad you mentioned the hair, as I find painting hair in watercolour quite challenging!

Thanks for the encouraging comment, Michael. I think you're right about why it was difficult - after 19 years of marriage, this is a face I know well, so anything not right bothers me! I really like your watercolour landscapes, by the way - this is my next project so I'll be taking a good look at them for inspiration!

Watercolour portrait of my husband. After several failed attempts to paint him, I've finally done a painting I'm happy with... Don't know why painting him was so difficult!

About the Artist
Jan Rossington

I'm an amateur artist and my favourite medium is oil. I particularly enjoy painting scenes of people using a palette knife. I've got a lot to learn about painting, but my goal is to keep improving. I try to enjoy the process of painting rather than worrying too much about what the final painting…
