Low key palette works but not sure about the very dark areas. Shadows?

Yes, they are shadows. However if you see something else instead, it is all right for me, because this work is more about the atmosphere than exact details like those you saw in the Carmel view, for example. Here, as you say, I am definitely low key and loose reality...
