Purple Sandpipers at high tide
These little birds - who aren’t particularly purple - see high tide as a great feeding opportunity. They scuttle over the slippery rocks with no problem, using their long toes to cling on. They breed in the Norwegian mountains, but spend their winters here. Watercolour on Arches HP, 18x12". French ultramarine, crimson alizarin, light red, yellow ochre, sap green and white gouache.
