It’s a difficult subject Diana, with so many dark areas. I like the cast shadow of the lamp on the left hand wall and the patch of light on the foreground. Perhaps it would be useful to do some tonal sketches to try different lighting conditions?

The light says everything, Diana, such a sense of time and place in those deep shadows!

Hello Stephen and thanks for your thoughts. You’ve reminded me that I’m going to start keeping a working sketch book and plan paintings prior to diving in. I really would benefit from mixing colour charts too. Obviously didn’t do it again😄😄 Thank you Thalia. It looks s daunting place but actually a very old but well used alley

I like it. You are doing well in a different direction Diana. Don't be afraid of white in a few spots like edges of sunlit items and glass.....

Unusual subject but you have painted it so well with the wonderful light in the distance, Diana

I wouldn't worry Diana such high quality work always shines great

I like this it works very well indeed .Interesting observations from your tutor and I remember being terrified of painting beach scenes as most would go in the bin, then a very accomplished artist over here told me “ keep thinking shapes , tone and colour” he said I was too obsessed with objects instead of mere shapes with various tones , this to me was an Eureka moment , I guess we go on learning all our lives

Thank you Dermot for your very helpful comment. Next week we have a daunting scene of Venice which hits the jackpot of water, boats and masses of architecture!! I will have your advice singing in my ears S,Tand C!!

Watercolour 22x15’’. My tutor rightly pointed out that my work is erratic in quality. I need more experience and practice to be able to tackle subjects that I struggle with. Landscapes and buildings, boats and water are well out of my comfort zone. I saw this alley lit up in the late afternoon sun and wanted to give it a try. It was so close to being binned but decided that was defeatist and carried onto produce s rough and ready painting but captured the atmosphere. I’m hoping my tutor will paint it too as I know he will really do it justice.
