nicely done

Fine work, David. You say you used no grid or aids, that's good, better still to get the likeness...clearly all your hard work is paying off. I often need a grid, when I'm copying something, to get the image correctly placed on the paper...let alone anything else. You say it's toned paper, I have one sketchbook with toned paper - don't like it.

Yeah, grids are such a useful tool but I am trying to shed the use of them being a crutch... this was done in a similar way to how I plan to work from life. No grid and no drawing on the image I was working from either (it was on my laptop screen)

Lovely sketch, David.

It looks really good David. I've got some of those "paper stick things" too and they are really good for blending.

A4 on toned paper. This was done trying to implement some of the idea's learned in the Bargue course. I didn't use a grid or anything so I am pleasantly surprised the likeness is there. I didn't want to slave away with smooth transitions so it is a bit looser than I normally work and I also used some blending tools (paper stick things) to smudge in areas.

About the Artist
D Hillman

Inspired by an artist friend I came back to paint a bit at the end of 2017. At the moment I am enjoying it and maybe because I have the patience to look more than I once did I am finding it easier and more enjoyable to actually produce a likeness.
