Wet Day: New York
This painting featured in an article I wrote for Leisure Painter on figures a little while ago. It was a demo piece with one of my classes. I used the subject to look at figures and reflections, as a vehicle to explore working wet and quickly, fusing rich washes into one another, spotting and laying an underpainting, implying rather than stating, and a whole bunch of other issues. I used a black and white photograph I found as a reference and kept a low key approach in the colour code. It was such a satisfying subject I decided to tweak it into a finished article and I remember it sold from my marquee at Sheffield's Art in the Gardens open air exhibition last September.
