Good combination of media, I like your painting.

I love the background idea, I wish I had read this before I started the picture I am now doing.

You have to start with the lightest colour and work up to the darkest. Also you must wait until each colour is quite dry before applying the next one. I find it's best to do two or three and draw on the one you like best. I think with this one the colours were Raw Sienna, Cadmium Red and Ultramarine. Light Red or Indian red or especially Venetian Red works well for a Venice atmosphere instead of Cadmium Red too. Caput Mortuum Violet - very watery - works well too.

The paper was rolled over with a succession of thin washes of watercolour, using a small sponge paint roller. Then the buildings and boats etc. were drawn on with watercolour pencils.
