Following an email suggesting an area of the site where artists can seek constructive criticism of their works, I have added this area to the forum to see how it goes. Please be constructive in your advice and 'play nice'!
I think this is an excellent idea. I always appreciate feedback from other people, as long as they feel they don't have to be too polite! Thanks for adding this. I will be sure to put my latest picture there, if/when I eventually finish it. Kay
Good idea. I believe this is the heading under which we should post our topics: http://www.painters-online.co.uk/forum/Forum34.aspx
Roger that. I like this. Egotism time! haha! Sorry. I'm in!!
Does this mean then that ONLY stuff that is considered by the artist to be 'unimprovable' should go in the gallery? Or does it mean that people with huge egos and / or closed minds ONLY should post to the gallery? Because whilst I applaud this new forum, it seems that we might have just diluted things a bit. Or am I missing the point? David
I think this forum area is set up as a trial for artists who want more specific/targeted advice and critique - it can be difficult to pose questions and/or respond to any comments added to the gallery images. I hope this thread may be of use for some artists, and certainly isn't supposed to detract from the gallery in any way.
Sometimes I finish a painting knowing there's something not quite right about it, but not really sure what. Or I'll finish a painting and I'll want to know if anyone else finds the subject interesting. If I spend too long on a painting, sometimes I stop noticing my mistakes. These are the kind of things I will ask for C&C on. Kay.
I've never yet painted anything unimprovable (I mean, feel free to disagree, but I'm quietly confident you won't!). But there are things that I've taken as far as I'm capable of taking them, and that's probably what David is saying. I think this is a good idea because while sometimes one gives a criticism on the Gallery, you're never really sure it was wanted. Not that this has often inhibited me, but this format allows us to develop an argument if one needs to be had - I've seen advice before and disagreed with it but didn't always feel the Gallery was the place to say so. Technical things should be uncontroversial, but so long as we all remember that an artist's choice of subject and treatment is personal to them, and that on such subjects all we can do is offer an opinion, all should be sweetness and light. Shouldn't be too hard to differentiate between constructive and destructive .... You know, I can be quite the optimist at times.
I agree that this is a really good idea but I thought that the "Work in Progress" idea was the same thing.
I treat this forum and the gallery like two separate places. I can't see a way of finding a forum user's gallery from here, for instance. I think a link would be useful (unless I'm missing it). Some people in here don't even have their own name in the forum so you can't find their work in the gallery from that either (yes, me being one of them). With an area specifically for critique, you can also let people know what you're looking for critique on - whether it's the whole thing, or the composition, or that awkward space in the lower corner, etc. I think it could produce some interesting threads that others can learn from as well. Kay
Or they could add their real name (in full so we know who you are) at the bottom of their posts by way of a signature or simply use their real name in their profile as several of us do.
Thanks Pat, Michael. I know, I was having a stab at myself with that comment! I still think it would be nice to have a direct link from here to the gallery though, without having to go from here to there, type in the search box ... A link to the gallery would be good in the profile box on the left, for instance.
