I still much prefer version 2 which just goes to show how we all view things differently and long may it be so - that's what it makes it all so interesting and keeps us on our toes.
They're both interesting in their own way. The one thing I'd say on reflection is that I'd have preferred the lines to be smoothly continuous, rather than, in places, a little wobbly. But then, I know that's not as easy to do as it might be without some actual aids to hand.
I think I prefer it landscape than portrait... I quite like the streaky bit and the clam shell shape with the colour gradient in it... I think it works best where you have contrast between the shapes rather than similar colour sections next to each other. I am with everyone else though, pretty hard to critique a work like this,
Thank-you for your further comments Syd. It looks as if I should have done another version rather than changing the original, I'll keep that in mind for future. Actually I did find the advice from those who commented useful in pointing out things I should keep in mind for future attempts. (I appreciate that there wasn't just polite silence!) I am planning a new one in quite a different style, with tonal variety in mind. And given I intend to use texture I won't be able to fiddle with it once completed! If it turns out OK it will appear on the Gallery, if you see it I'd welcome your opinion.
Having given this more thought I decided to explain further. I don't want to make too much of a meal of it but it will clarify why the change. It is very much a part of how I paint to keep changing/revising/fiddling as I go (good thing I don't work in watercolour!), possibly because I am not painting realism, and also because I am never quite satisfied either (but have to stop at some stage!). I prop wip up somewhere and just let things occur to me. I hadn't been entirely satisfied with that abstract, especially the central blue shape. I received Michael's feedback the evening I posted the painting and had already started making changes before calling it a day. I didn't see Syd's feedback until the next morning by which time change was underway. I hadn't even thought of doing another version. I have taken the various comments on board though, as they will all be helpful for future abstract work.
