I look forward to seeing your next picture, David. I hope you wont be altering the one you posted, if it were mine I'd frame it and display it with pride. Yes, our dogs are our best friends.
The watercolour has certainly worked in this case - you've caught a very interesting expression in your hound - the 'do I hear the distant rustle of a packet of biscuits?' look, operative over a mile or so.... I think Ellen is right about capturing the essence of an animal in watercolour - I don't say it's easier, but when it works it just does: you've got the mood, the way you (and the animal) felt at the time, the life. Other media are by their nature a little more laboured - though of course, you can have highly-wrought watercolours as well. A good, thick black pencil or conté stick can also achieve lively results (provided your dog doesn't sneak up to your pad, shove her nose underneath it, and flip it out of your hands, sitting back with a pleased expression on her chops: no, Emmadog - I haven't forgotten....).
