A local store that sells paintings and china etc. has a habit of buying paintings from our local exhibitions at a nominal price and putting ridiculous amounts on them for resale!
I was actually at one of these local Exhibitions a couple of years ago Robert and witnessed the owner offering a "fiver" for a painting. The artist accepted right away - why, I don't know. I was quite incensed. I have noticed of late that the shop seems to have less paintings for sale, so I wonder if the artists have cottoned on. Also brings to mind of a sale for charity I helped at. We had hired the middle tables to hold this sale - it was in a community hall. Every Saturday local tradespeople hired the outside tables. We were selling some books and one of the booksellers from another table came and bought a few of our books, took them back to their table and put higher prices on them - and sold them!! Don't suppose it was illegal but was definitely unscrupulous.
Michael, that you for sharing your prices, that's very kind of you. Syd, the cow painting is for a present unfortunately (sorry i should have mentioned that before), however, two of the four people that wanted to buy it have asked if I will paint them their own (different) cow pictures and we are just firming up the details - so potentially 2 commissions/sales. I am lucky in that i have done a few paintings for charity auction that people have seen on the social media platform I am referring to, so I think I have got a tiny bit of a 'name' for myself there - very tiny though! You are right though, the feedback and follow up conversations have given me a confidence boost. Stub/Adele - re: other places bumping up prices and selling them on - I can't believe a business would be so brazen, that's awful! Robert's suggestion is a v good one.
Sorry Syd I probably didn't make it clear, the chap that bought the books from us charity workers had his own business so he made the money for himself. The community hall is used every week by private businesses. The charity was only able to hire 4 tables. So he paid our price which was really cheap and then hiked up the price per book and sold them for himself.
Read again your statement Syd and I see what you mean. It still rankles though and I would never have the nerve to do that!
For once Syd we are in total agreement!! Still I am happy the way I am!
I calculate mine in terms of boxes of cigars - i.e. how many could I buy if I sold this painting? It's about as reliable a measure as any other...... to be honest, I start at a basic valuation roughly linked to the size of the piece, and work up and down from there; up if I can, but I have concessionary rates too - this may be commercially unwise, but I'm just lovably generous. And modest.
