I've jusy had a quick trawl through the instruction vids on youtube for pastels.  I have to be honest, they were abysmal, all emphasising rubbing, about the best were two from UK artists, can;t remember the names, I think one went by the name of Jenny Keel, the other, a man, Welsh by trhe sound of him.  Both rubbed and then covered with fresh strokes, treating the rubbed pastel as an underpainting.  When I started with pastels, I read the book by past Pasatel Society President, the late John Blockley.  He rarely rubbed, and then only used it as an underpainting.  It seemed to me the obvious way to go, I'm wondering what it is with these people who make the vids, mostlyfrom the USA, Is there a feeling that pastel, so it must be soft and dreamy?bestMick
