I've never really used pastel, but was given some old pastel paper the other day and had a go; sufficiently successfully to suggest I might have another go.  But I know very little about them - I found I had to use black, either charcoal or conté crayon, to get darks sharp enough to make any difference; presumably there are darker pastels than the landscape ones I've got, but before I buy more - do more experienced pastellists (well, you couldn't be LESS experienced..) have suggestions about achieving darks?  Any suggestions/help appreciated.  I don't know that I'll ever be any good in this medium, but it would be useful to make colour notes for paintings, apart from anything else if I can carry on improving as I seem to be doing (no, I'm not going to post it!  There was an awful lot of room for that improvement).
