Painting the silver birch trees.

Painting the silver birch trees.

A description and images of my work in progress.

This painting was worked from a photo I took locally. I wanted to catch the freshness of the sunny winters day. I decided to mask out the picture using both masking tape and masking fluid. This allows me to maintain a continuity to the washes. I also rubbed in some candle wax to maintain a few highlights a break up the washes. Starting off with a wash of ultramarine, raw sienna and purple lake for the sky then adding vandyke brown and sap green to my palette for the undergrowth. This is the point where it can look very messy. When it has dried the masking can be removed as shown and the painting becomes much clearer. Finally the detail to finish.
