Suggested materials

  • 300gsm (140lb) Canson Heritage cold pressed watercolour paper - recommended size half imperial (21 x 15 inches)
  • Your own favourite watercolour brushes, the larger the better - highly recommend large Chinese brushes, Ron Hanson Hake (large), Pro Arte One Stroke 2 inch flat, mops and so on. Not obligatory, just use what you have
  • Several Jam jars (or similar) for clean water mixing
  • Containers for mixing Derwent XL Block colours
  • Spritzer with clean water
  • A set of Derwent XL Block (Charcoal) colours or a select few - your choice
  • Charcoal (Nitram charcoal soft charcoal sticks highly recommended)
  • Grey and black and earth tone ranges of soft pastels - highly recommend Rembrandt harder white, black and grey and earth tone pastels and the same range with Unison Colour softer pastels
  • A few brighter highlight pastels such as beige and high key yellow ochre colours advised
  • Cool blues with Cerulean blue and cobalt blue and Indigo darker blues in pastel ranges recommended
  • Drawing board to fit the paper you use
  • Tape or bulldog clips to secure your paper to a drawing board

Note: Don’t forget to set your easel in an upright position - not flat!
