Here’s an exercise to help you work with tone, shade and form, by Joe Hush

I set up this still life in our garden with the intention of using it as a project to explain how to work with a limited palette of colours to create form, and how to plan a painting with preliminary work, sketches and thought processes. The objective here is for you to visualise a finished painting in your mind before you begin painting.  This exercise will help you to paint the image in your head, develop the mood and make it tangible, and not to take the composition of the photograph too literally.

Here I will also explain what I saw in my mind when I looked at the objects. The painting itself was kept simple, not only by the use of limited colours, but also by the way that it was painted and by the light – or lack of it – on the subject.
