Mark Buck demonstrates a watercolour painting of a busy view of the Southbank, London in winter.

The light on the Southbank is wonderful with long afternoon shadows. I had been sketching the book stalls and was walking back taking photos looking into the sun. This view is just passing the Royal Festival Hall with the London eye in the background looking South West.

I painted Southbank Winter during lockdown in January 2021, it took me about three hours including drying times.

TOP TIPS

The board is kept at a slight angle and paper was not stretched.

I paint very quickly and try to keep my mark-making dynamic, holding brushes at the ends not on the ferule.

I don’t use masking fluid preferring to leave the whites as paper.

I add framing tape to the borders to give me a sharp edge when I pull it off. Try it it’s brilliant.
