In this oil pastel painting project with Tim Fisher, you will learn how to make some basic marks with your oil pastel, and layer and blend colour to give a realistic effect to your work.

Begin with blending

Finger-blending helps to push the oil pastel into your painting surface.

Some brands of oil pastel are too hard to blend with your fingers; sometimes a rag is required.

For this project, the canvas surface is quite coarse, so the blending process helps to ingrain the colour into the canvas.

For gradual gradations and subtle colour changes, rub at the marks made by oil pastels with your fingertips or a blending tool.

The photographs below show three blending techniques:

1. Blending with your fingers

2. Blending with a colour shaper

3. Blending with a transparent pastel made with wax and oil (no pigment)
