Abstract painting simply invites you to paint. It's not subject to strict rules and constraints, but this doesn't necessarily make it easier easier. Quite the opposite, in fact; it can often be more difficult to develop your painting without guidelines. You might ask: ‘Where do I even start, and when do I stop?’

Abstract painting offers you a freedom which may appear unstructured. However, if you divide your painting using the golden section it will appear harmonious and give you a frame within which you can lay down your dreams.

Go on a journey while you are painting, because dreaming animates your painting and is reflected in its expression: think of a story or remember one that inspires you.

Follow the demonstration below from the new book, Abstract Painting, by Petra Thölken and see where abstract painting can take you.

"For Patina Allure, I was thinking about my experience in Thailand,' says Petra. 'The smells of fine spices permeating the heavy air, loud engine noises appearing and releasing me from the big streets and into the alleys. My curiosity entices me onward, past wooden doors with flaking paint. What awaits me? All of this resonates in this picture, shrouded by the patina of another time."
