6 x 7.5 inches Derwent Inktense blocks and graphite. I read an article in an Art magazine about the Japanese NOTAN principle. Notan describes how one can create harmony between dark and light. It's really about design as a black and white pattern and the balance between the two. Using the Notan principal I found a black and white simplified an image that used the strong building lines present in the image. These lines contrasted well with the soft Tuscany hills. Some parts of the image were obscured in the original photograph. These parts of the picture turned out to be very important. Other details, such as the plants and flowers in the foreground of the photograph, were pretty but diverted the viewer away from the Tuscany composition. All this became apparent through Notan.
