It’s a really good painting Denise , I recall you starting this and asking about painting a heat haze. You have achieved a hazy look I think, it’s probably one of the hardest things to paint, so don’t put yourself down too much . The colours are excellent as are the hyena, I’m sure you will like it a bit more in time.

I like this a lot, the hyenas are great...suitably nasty looking. I understand losing interest in a painting, it happens to all of us, this one has turned out very well.

Great colours in this, Denise, and you’ve caught a suitably fierce expression in the foreground hyena!

You have created a lovely menacing piece of art Denise. I shouldn't worry to much it's all a learning curve

I think you've achieved a painting with a real punch to it, so you should be very pleased.

They look scary but great. Think you have done a good job Denise. 💜

Well done Denise! Hot and ferocious!

This is a very good painting, great composition and well drawn - and the colours are spot on

You have created a wonderful painting, Denise. You have definitely achieved a feeling of haze and the shadows add to this.

It’s great! I remember it well…

You took on a really difficult subject here: I'm going to be honest, and say I think your two foreground hyenas are excellent, but I don't think you've got the heat haze to work yet - it's the horizontal stripes of white or off-white which aren't convincing me that it's heat-haze we're looking at; those on the left are also reducing the impact of your fierce hyena to some extent (in my opinion: others are available!). And the strip of orange-red in the centre of the painting is grabbing the eye and pulling it away from the foreground - more colour recession would probably help to give that heat-haze impression, but you've got strong colour, overpainted with the white; I would suggest the stronger colours belong in the foreground, paling into the distance. But this was extraordinarily ambitious for someone to take on who's only been painting in oil for a matter of months; in your place, I'd put it away for now and come back to it a bit later, when you can see the painting as a whole and not just the bits that bother you: which is a problem many of us confront.

Your comments are much appreciated Paul, Lewis, Jenny, Chris, Heather, Faye, Linda, Rachel, David, Alan and Robert. You are exactly right Robert, I can see all you are saying. I'll give it a few weeks and I will work on this some more, I think with what you have said I can definitely improve on what I've done. The two background hyena look rubbish so I'm going to loose one and fix the other. I can see it with fresh eyes now, thanks.

I started this a few months ago, then lost heart. I decided to have another crack at it. I was trying to paint a heat haze, not sure it's turned out how I wanted. I couldn't find any tips on how to paint a heat haze. Well, I'm calling it finished but that's not to say I won't go back and fiddle some more. I think I've tried but I'm not very happy with it to be honest. Oil on canvas board.
