Superb illustration.

I wasn't familiar with this opening line Lew, but I do like this drawing of the character immensely. I expect that you have seen the great artist and illustrator Rowland Hilder's drawings of Moby Dick. One of the many books that he illustrated back in the 30's and later. A different approach and superbly drawn, ink in the main, which was for the benefit of printing I expect, so little or no half-tones.

REALY well crafted Lewis,. You mange to suggest so much detail with your pencil strokes.

Thank you Stephen, and the two Alan's, for your comments. I didn't know Rowland Hilder had illustrated Moby Dick...I had him mentally stored as an landscape artist. I've had a quick look at a couple of his illustrations. Fantastic work. It seems he was much more than an exceptional landscape artist, I'll have to do some more digging on him.

Much of his illustration style was carried into his watercolours Lew. ie, heavy use of tones and contrast in particular. I do have this book, along with many others that he illustrated, albeit not in great condition. All bought of ebay and Alibris I think.

Terrific work Lew. His eyes say he's looking at me as he speaks. Lovely and great character illustration...

I like it just as it is Lewis, brilliant sketching as always 😀

His face does engage you Lewis - a good plus point with a portrait when you feel you can connect.

The way he looks at the viewer is fantastic, to the point of eerie. I feel we're in the middle of a conversation, one that requires your full attention. Excellent work, and I would LOVE to see the finished painting. Bri

Fabulous work Lewis, great drawing skills as always.

Another great drawing Lewis.

Great illustration. Great focus.

A very engaging piece Lewis, beautifully drawn.

Wonderful portrait there Lewis!

Thanks again to all those who've had a look and who've commented.

The famous opening line from Herman Melville's 'Moby Dick.' A4 sketchbook, water soluble pencil. A sketch for a possible painting...I was intending to draw more background, but have left it with the merest hint of background. It IS just a sketch. Having done it, I think I'll make Ishmael full length in the painting, striding down a hill to the New Bedford Whaling town. When I get round to it.

Lewis Cooper

Self taught. Love drawing. Like to make pictures up, without using reference pics, often in cartoon style. I do other pictures where I do use reference. I'm knocking on a bit, born in 1940 in Greenwich, London. Retired, and loving it.
