Newark Castle
Pastel on sugar paper. I took this photo years ago and I've been meaning to paint it about the same amount of time. I've resisted this long because a) I can't do buildings and b) I can't do boats either! Built in the 12th cen by the Bishop of Lincoln and partially destroyed (slighted) in the 17th towards the end of the civil war. This year see's the 800th anniversary of the death of King John who died here on his way to London. It's by no means an exact representation of the castle in details but I hope it gives the impression of it's solidity, even though it's a ruin.
